Cucumber Satellite

Posted by Victor

Our good friends and mentors, Cucumber Satellite Theatre and Film Society, are presenting their spring term scene study scenes. I was going to tell you how amazing this group of actors are, and how they include our own Brendan Taylor,  Susan Dalton, and Sooraj Jawal, all actors in our upcoming play SubUrbia, as well as Dagan Nish, Martin Hallat, and Shaynee Berg, our understudies. I was gonna tell you all that, but I won't. You can see for yourself in the rehearsal footage for the upcoming show. The Saturday class performs this Thursday and Saturday at 7pm. The Sunday class on Friday and Sunday at the same time. The address is 245 Alexander Street, and tickets are $10 at the door. Hope to see you there!

Krapp’s Last Tape

Posted by Victor

Not too long ago, the Celluloid Social Club hosted a screening of a documentary on Harold Pinter's life. For those of you who don't know, he is a Nobel Prize winning playwright, author of such plays as "The Birthday Party." In this documentary, Pinter talks about Samuel Beckett, whom he credits as one of his biggest inspirations. It's only fitting, then, that this man should star in a production of Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape," and lucky us that it's available on Youtube:

Here's an older doc from the BBC for those of you curious about Harold Pinter's life and work:

Hurricane Ada

I was over at my friends', Paolo and Ashley, and they put on some "Said the Whale." For those of you who don't know, that's a local band that's having a lot success. There's even a CBC doc coming out about them.

Anyway, we found a video on Youtube, and lo and behold, it's our very own James Pizzinato! And, man, he's good in this video. Made me tear up, no joke. Also featured is our friend Jordana Largy, who's also great in it. And now, you guys can watch it too. Not to brag, but James is playing Tim in our production of "SubUrbia" by Eric Bogosian, this July.

Chills... My friend Paolo is also a musician and you can check him out at www.paolobrian.com. I designed his album art, btw. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Ashley's stint as the stink-eye girl in "Juno." She did a great job on "Gods of Youth" too. That's it for today.

Can’t Truss It

Posted by Victor

The early '90s were a rich time for hip-hop. There were a number of groups using the style to discuss social issues and express pride in their African American heritage... That makes it sound  really boring, doesn't it? Truss me, this is some of the best hip hop you'll ever hear. Today's history lesson courtesy of Chuck D, Flavor Flave, and the rest of the crew that form Public Enemy. Yeh Boy.

Bonus Feature: Bryce said to me, "If you're gonna post about Public Enemy on the website, you have to put the opening sequence to 'Do the Right Thing' on there." I was all for it, but couldn't find it, so instead check this clip out:

PS. If anyone does find the opening sequence, send me a link. Meantime, learn more about Public Enemy and the golden age of hip hop at your friendly neighbourhood Wikipedia.

“The Cover-Up”, a local independent feature starring a Ninja Pirate

Posted by Brendan

Hey everyone! Brendan here to tell you about "The Cover-Up", a fully locally produced independent feature film set to start shooting on April 16th, for 2 weeks!

The film is an "American Pie"-style comedy...
"...about a love lorn young man who in an attempt to win back the 'girl who got away' ends up having to lie to her about a crime he didn't even commit! After being blackmailed, bruised, and basted, yes basted with a turkey baster, he realizes if he really cares for her he'll have to risk everything on telling her the truth."
I landed the supporting role of 'Adam, the best friend of the aforementioned young man 'Matt'.
It all started last summer when I was asked to participate in a reading of a script that Erick Boychuck, director of "The Cover-Up" wrote with a couple friends. I was 'cast' in the role of Adam back then, and Erick liked my version of Adam. We stayed in touch, and he invited me to come audition when he wanted to go ahead and make the film. Sure enough, he wrote a few more drafts, then decided he was going to shoot it. He posted the auditions on the VAG, but contacted me directly to come out and read for Adam again...and the rest....is history.
I'm very excited to get to play the role of Adam, a loyal loveable lug who's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but has a heart of gold...
It will be interesting to see how Adam informs Buff, my character in our next play "SubUrbia", coming this July...they are similar in many ways!
Till then, please visit the IndieGogo site for "The Cover-Up", and the Facebook page!
Keep updated for the Premiere screening this summer!
